Maintenance
Does a UV Water Treatment System Need Maintenance?
Yes, UV systems need maintenance. Learn about lamp replacement, sleeve cleaning, alarms, and why a glowing lamp does not prove performance.
Yes, but the precise work and timing depend on the unit. A UV system can only perform as designed when water reaches the chamber under the manufacturer’s specified conditions and the unit is maintained. The manual may call for lamp replacement after a stated service period, sleeve cleaning or inspection, alarm checks, and attention to power and flow.
Do not judge performance solely by whether a lamp glows. Some units track operating hours or provide alarms; others require a maintenance record and scheduled service. If an alarm indicates a fault, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and seek health-department advice when the system is being used to address a confirmed microbial concern.
The water may require pretreatment if particles or other conditions interfere with UV transmission. UV inactivates microorganisms; it does not remove hardness, metals, or dissolved chemicals. NSF/ANSI 55 covers UV microbiological treatment systems, with different intended-use classes. Verify the product’s exact listing and conditions. NSF standards guide (opens in a new tab)
For private wells, UV maintenance does not replace annual testing or prompt testing after a suspected contamination event. The CDC recommends annual well testing for specified indicators and contacting health officials about additional local risks. CDC private-well guidance (opens in a new tab)
