How Often Should You Maintain a Whole-House Water Filtration System?

2 min read

Maintenance depends on the exact system. Learn what to ask at installation, what to record, and how often cartridges, salt, and UV lamps need attention.

“Whole-house filter” covers many kinds of equipment, so maintenance varies. A cartridge housing, backwashing carbon tank, water softener, iron-treatment system, and UV unit do not share one maintenance calendar. The correct schedule is the one for the exact model, adjusted to the water and use conditions specified by its manufacturer.

At installation, ask for the equipment manual, the service schedule, replacement part numbers, current part prices, alarm meanings, and the conditions that require a service visit. Record the installation date and each maintenance event. Check visible fittings for leaks and note changes in pressure, taste, odor, or system indicators. Those observations can signal a need for inspection, but they do not diagnose the cause by themselves.

Some systems need cartridge changes; others need salt, resin or media service, UV lamp care, or backwash settings checked. A backwashing system may send water to a drain during its cycle. Keep the drain unobstructed and installed according to the product instructions and local requirements. Do not change control settings without understanding the equipment.

EPA recommends following product-specific filter maintenance instructions. The CDC recommends annual well testing for specified indicators and a yearly well checkup. CDC well guidance (opens in a new tab)
