What Should You Do With Your Water Filter When You Go on Vacation?
Going on vacation? Learn what to check on your filter, softener, RO, or UV system before you leave and how to restart it safely.
There is no single vacation procedure for every water system. Some equipment can remain operating normally; other systems have specific shutdown, bypass, flushing, or restart directions. The correct answer is in the model’s manual and may depend on how long the home will be vacant.
Before leaving, check the system for visible leaks, confirm alarms are not active, and make sure the drain line and surrounding area are clear. Do not switch valves or shut off power unless the manual directs it. If you plan to shut off the home’s water, ask whether doing so affects the treatment unit, water heater, RO storage tank, UV alarm, or regeneration schedule.
On return, follow the manufacturer’s flushing instructions, especially for drinking-water systems with storage tanks or filters that have been idle. If the water is from a private well, follow the well owner’s maintenance guidance and investigate any flood or contamination event that occurred while away. CDC guidance recommends testing after suspected contamination and maintaining private wells regularly. CDC well-water guidance (opens in a new tab)
Do not assume that running water briefly clears every possible issue, and do not use water that is subject to a utility or public-health advisory until officials say it is safe. If the system signals a fault or water quality has changed, contact the appropriate service provider or health authority.
