What Do NSF/ANSI Water Filter Certifications Mean?

2 min read

NSF/ANSI numbers are not grades. Learn what 42, 44, 53, 55, and 58 actually cover and how to verify a certification claim for one exact model.

Certification is useful only when the buyer checks what the certificate covers. NSF/ANSI standard numbers describe testing frameworks; they are not grades that rank every system from poor to excellent. A product certified to one standard is not automatically certified for every contaminant a homeowner may care about.

NSF describes NSF/ANSI 42 as covering specified aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odor; NSF/ANSI 53 addresses specified health-effect reduction claims; NSF/ANSI 44 covers residential water softeners; NSF/ANSI 55 covers UV microbiological systems; and NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse-osmosis drinking-water systems. Each product may carry only selected claims. NSF standards guide (opens in a new tab)

When a salesperson says a system is “NSF certified,” ask for the exact model number and the certification body’s listing. Confirm the named reduction claim, rated capacity, flow conditions, and replacement component requirements. If the concern is lead, for example, look for a specific lead-reduction claim on the exact product rather than relying on the standard number alone. EPA consumer material similarly emphasizes checking certified claims and product details. EPA filter maintenance and selection resources (opens in a new tab)

Certification also does not eliminate the need for correct installation and maintenance. A filter used past its rated capacity or with incompatible water conditions may not perform as expected. Follow flushing, cartridge replacement, and other manufacturer instructions.
