Hardness
Is Wilmington water hard? Artesian vs. Veolia vs. City of Wilmington
The honest answer to "is my Wilmington water hard?" is: it depends who supplies it. Three different utilities serve the area, and they draw from different sources.
One of the first questions we get from Wilmington-area homeowners is simple: is my water hard? The honest answer is that it depends on which utility serves your street, because the Wilmington area is split between three suppliers drawing from different sources — and source is what drives hardness.
The three utilities around Wilmington
- Artesian Water: serves much of the suburban New Castle County area, drawing largely from groundwater. Groundwater tends to pick up more dissolved minerals on its way up, which generally means more hardness.
- Veolia Delaware: serves the Brandywine Hundred and north Wilmington area.
- City of Wilmington: treats surface water from the Brandywine Creek for customers inside the city.
Surface water and groundwater behave differently. Groundwater sits in contact with rock and soil and dissolves calcium and magnesium — the two minerals that define hardness. Surface water often starts softer but varies more with the seasons. That is why two neighbors a few streets apart can have genuinely different water.
What hard water actually does
- Spots and film on glasses, dishes and shower doors.
- Scale inside the water heater and fixtures, which shortens their life and raises energy use.
- Skin that feels dry and hair that feels filmy, because soap does not rinse as cleanly.
- More soap and detergent needed to get the same result.
Do you actually need a softener?
Sometimes the answer is no — and we would rather tell you that than sell you a system you do not need. If your measured hardness is low, a whole-house carbon filter for chlorine and taste may be all that makes sense. If it is moderate to high, as a lot of groundwater-fed homes here are, a properly sized softener pays for itself in longer-lasting appliances and less soap. The point is to decide from your number, not from a brochure.
